Beaumaris is a historic town on the eastern coast of the Isle of Anglesey, overlooking the Menai Strait. The town was established as a planned medieval settlement under Edward I and became an important strategic and commercial centre. Its waterfront location and exceptionally rich architectural heritage make it one of Anglesey's most significant historic towns.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Beaumaris Castle is the town's defining landmark and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising the castles and town walls of Edward I in Gwynedd. Although never completed, its concentric design is regarded as one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture. The town also contains a historic courthouse, gaol, church and attractive Georgian and Victorian buildings.

The seafront provides views across the Menai Strait towards Snowdonia, while boat trips offer opportunities to explore the surrounding waters and wildlife. Nearby attractions include Plas Newydd, the Menai Bridge and the wider landscapes of Anglesey.

Food and shopping

Beaumaris has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, ice-cream shops, galleries and independent retailers, particularly around the historic centre and waterfront. Welsh seafood, lamb, cheeses and locally produced ingredients feature prominently in the regional cuisine. Spring through autumn is particularly popular for exploring the castle, coast and surrounding countryside, while Beaumaris's historic architecture provides year-round interest.
