Basildon is the principal town and administrative centre of the Basildon borough in Essex, situated between London and Southend-on-Sea. The modern town was designated as a New Town after the Second World War and expanded rapidly as part of a major programme of planned development. Several existing villages, including Laindon, Pitsea and Vange, became closely integrated into the expanding urban area.
