Avonmouth is a port and industrial district in the west of Bristol, located at the mouth of the River Avon on the Severn Estuary. Its development was closely linked to the expansion of Bristol's maritime trade and the construction of Avonmouth Docks in the nineteenth century. The area subsequently became an important centre for manufacturing, energy, warehousing and logistics. Although primarily industrial in character, Avonmouth occupies a strategically important position between Bristol, South Wales and the wider Severn Estuary.
