Today Anstruther retains much of its traditional character, with historic buildings, narrow streets and a picturesque waterfront. Its position on the Fife Coastal Path also makes it an important stopping point for walkers and visitors exploring the East Neuk.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Anstruther Harbour is the heart of the town and remains one of its most attractive features. The Scottish Fisheries Museum provides an extensive insight into the history of fishing and coastal communities in Scotland, while nearby St Andrews offers a major historic university, cathedral and golf destination. Anstruther is particularly famous for seafood and traditional fish and chips, with its waterfront restaurants and fish-and-chip shops forming an important part of the visitor experience. Local cafés, bakeries and pubs provide additional choices, while the surrounding East Neuk is known for local produce and seafood. Late spring through early autumn is the best period for walking the coastal path, exploring the harbour and taking boat trips to the Isle of May.
